Conquering Capones, Camara, and Anawangin Island, Zambales

My first trip to Capones and Anawangin Island left me wanting, so I vowed to return and conquer said islands. Here are the pictures (from Atty. Marge, Nino, Jaz, Raffy, Tita Olga and Kokoy's camera) of a very fulfilling and awesome experience with kat, mariel, and their diving friends - kokoy, antonino, raffy, jas, tita olga, michelle, Tita Sandra, Atty. marge. - along with pat and a.j.

If one wants to go to the lighthouse in Capones Island, specifically tell the boatman to take you to the eastern side of the island. At first they refused to do so, but armed with what little Ilocano I knew, I insisted that they take us there, high tide or low tide. The trek towards the top is easy, but be careful of loose rocks.

The lighthouse was amazing. It reminded me of the one in Cape Bojeador in Burgos, Ilocos Norte, but the one in Capones was not as well preserved. Make sure to go to the eastern-most tip of the island, as the view from there is breathtaking.

We then proceeded to Camar...

Pilgrimage to the Church of St. Francis Javier

It sits on top of a mountain, within the village of Hanginan in Maasin, Southern Leyte - named as such because of the gentle and cool winds that pass the town throughout the day. It is a quiet little town home to people who sell souvenirs, coconut bibingka, and food to tired but successful trekkers.

For non-professional hikers, the trek to the top of the mountain takes around 2 hours and 1 hour to go back down. One starts the hike on rocky and uneven soil, but after 45 minutes, one will be surprised to find a cemented path. The steepness of the climb ranges from around 40 to 60 degrees.

The last stretch was the hardest, as one has to climb steep stairs on to the village of Hanginan. These stairs were made harder by the fact that each was a meter apart, so one had to take big steps for every step.

But the view was spec...

This is bread from the Guerrero family's bakery in Matalom, Southern Leyte, which is the counterpart of Manila's pan de sal. It's full to the core, without any airpockets and is very filling.

The next example is the Pan de Totoy from Siargao, Mindanao, which translates to Boobie Bread in English (go figure). It is a bit tough on the outside, but very soft inside and again, has but a few air pockets and is very filling. It is baked pugon style, using coconut wood (not mangrove wood, mind you).

The last and the closest to my heart is the Ilocos Biscocho. This bread originated and is made only in the town of Pasuquin, around 30 minutes from Laoag, and the store is but a stone's throw away from my ancestral home. It is soft allthroughout, tastes of star anis, and is great with coffee, any kind of jam, and more so (in my opini...

First trip to Mindanao: Agusan, Surigao and Siargao

Thanks to the Katutubo Desk and Dean Candelaria, I was able to go to Mindanao to help in the paralegal training of members of the Mamanwa Tribe in Siargao. I'm thankful to God I made the right decision to take this job, as it has given me opportunity to travel for free, meet new people and to live out and give a face to the very theories I'm applying to my thesis.

Getting there was an adventure in itself. Since our roro was to leave at 12 noon and our flight got delayed by 30 minutes, the Bishop's driver (from hell) had to go at 100km/hr to cross a mountain (think of the twists and turns with matching skidding) to the port. It was a crazy ride. Then we had to ride a ro-ro to siargao (we were late by 20 mins, and the priests and nuns had to talk to the Ferry company to wait for us. real divine intervention), which took 3hours and then a jeep topload since it was full.

We stayed at the Travellers Pension House, a beachfront resort. We ate seafood all day, sarap!

Going home, we p...

Jazz night, wine and Penguin Cafe

Mundi and Lotte took me to the yearly Jazz festival in Sofitel. We were able to experience music by Omar Sosa et al (check him out at www.omarsosa.com), which was a mixture of Malinese, African, Cuban music. It was a really overwhelming experience. It was amazing how innovative they were in making instruments - from plastic bags, water bottles, rubber tubes, etc - to how intense their energy was while performing.

Drunk from the experience, we just had to have wine. I asked my friend Kiko where to hang out in the Malate area, and he recommended Penguin Cafe/Gallery. Cecille Zamora says that this was the hip and happening place years ago, and is one of the last places in Malate that's still decent to hang out in and has surprisingly kept its character after so many

Thanks Tin.

What am I doing wrong?

Okay, I'm tired of beating around the bush. I'm a beautiful
(spectacularly beautiful) 25 year old girl. I'm articulate and classy. I'm not from New York. I'm looking to get married to a guy who makes at least half a million a year. I know how that sounds, but keep in mind that a million a year is middle class in New York City, so I don't think I'm overreaching at all.

Are there any guys who make 500K or more on this board? Any wives? Could you send me some tips? I dated a business man who makes average around 200 - 250. But that's where I seem to hit a roadblock. 250,000 won't get me to central park west. I know a woman in my yoga class who was married to an investment banker and lives in Tribeca, and she's not as pretty as I am, nor is she a great genius. So what is she doing right? How do I get to her level?

Here are my questions specifically:

- Where do you single rich men hang out? Give me specifics- bars,
rest...

Who's going to Thailand anytime soon?

I need new boxing gloves, but the ones here are thin and expensive. In Thailand they're cheaper and of better quality. If anyone can help me with my predicament, I would be eternally grateful.
